After my last article, I was informed by a reader that there is a website that allows you to go back and see what Youtube used to look like. I attached a link to the website below the pictures. Just thought anyone who enjoyed my last blog would also find this interesting. Enjoy!
YouTube was founded on February 14th, 2005 and bought by tech giant Google on October 9th, 2006 for $1.65 billion. As the appearance of YouTube has changed over the years, so has its content. In the early years of YouTube, most of the videos were “defined by the accidental, someone who creates a single video and it becomes something else” said Kevin Allocca, Head of Culture and Trends at YouTube, in an interview with The Guardian. Examples of these “one off hits” include Charlie bit my finger, Evolution of Dance, Double Rainbow, Scarlet takes a tumble, and David After Dentist just to name a few. I highly recommend watching these videos (especially David After Dentist), they guarantee a good laugh and will give you a better understanding of what YouTube used to be. Fast forward 13 years to 2018 and YouTube is now dominated by YouTubers. A YouTuber, as defined by Google, is “a frequent user of the video-sharing website YouTube, especially someone who produces and appears in videos on the site”, and yes “YouTuber” is now officially in the dictionary. YouTubers often post videos on some kind of schedule and use the platform as a source of income. Many YouTubers are vloggers, gamers, tech reviewers, pranksters, sports, etc. The list is almost endless. If there is a hobby related to it, there is probably someone who makes YouTube videos about it. This transition of YouTube away from one time posts of funny/unique videos, to creators who often post multiple times a week has totally changed the platform. Personally, I believe the change is for the better. There are still plenty of funny one time posts but YouTube has created a platform that allows people to make a living doing what they love.
